So the dust has settled on an amazing 2019 festival on Hayling Island, but we are not quite done for the summer! In a couple of weeks the Armada team are heading to Skegness for our first ever event there, and we are really looking forward to seeing how the festival works in a new spot.
Now, it's our first time in Skegness, and we are hoping to build a positive event like the one we have at Hayling Island. But it has taken us 7 years at Hayling to get the festival to the size it is now, and we are at the very start of this process at Skegness - so the first thing to say is please don't expect something of the size of Hayling Island this year!
We think it's a lovely spot for a festival. The beach is sandy and stunning and is directly linked to a large grassy area behind the dunes, perfect for hosting a festival. Parking and campervan zones are easy and close by. We are starting small but the space has the potential to grow.
As it's a first event, we just want people to come and experience the area and get involved - so everything festival and kitesurfing wise is free. You just need to register for your tickets in advance so we know who is coming! Click here to register.
The campervan spots are in a nearby car park with direct sea and beach views, just 2 minutes from the festival. The local council are kindly letting us use these car parks for overnight stays (not usually allowed) but everyone has to Pay and Display at the council rates (£8 a day). You just need to register in advance here so we can allocate you a space for your van. We have not been granted camping options for this first year - but it's someting we will work on in future, and there are lots of good B & B's and other hotels nearby.

So what can you expect if you feel like joining us at the event? Well, just like on Hayling, we will be working closely with the BKSA to run the British Kitesurfing Championships. So if the wind allows we will be running the comp over the Saturday and Sunday, on the beach directly in front of the festival area. The BKSA team will be managing the beach and all the safety aspects of the competition as usual, and if you wish to compete there is a separate ticket which you can book at the BKSA website here. Any questions on the BKC, please get in touch with Russ Farrington on firstname.lastname@example.org
Alongside the Champs, there is loads of space for recreational kitesurfing, so stick your kites and board in the car and van and bring them along - if you get a session or two over the weekend, even better!
A number of our brand partners are also joining us for this first event, so there will be plenty of gear and expert advice around for kiters too - Duotone, Cabrinha, Ozone, Flysurfer, Liquid Force, Off Grid and more will all have stands in the festival area. Our campervan partner Platinum Wave will also have vans on site and our travel partner KiteWorldWide will be joining us to tempt you with your next awesome kiting holiday, whether beginner or advanced. All stands will be outside in the festival area - no massive marquees at this one!
Taster zones will be set up by the BKSA on the beach to give everyone a chance to fly powerkites for the first time, with the guidance of trained instructors.
Lewis Crathern will of course be on site for the duration of the event, talking to everyone on the PA and explaining what is going on in his own unique style!
Our brewery partner Batemans have been amazing in helping us get this first event of the ground. They have been brewing beer since 1874 so they know their stuff! And they will be running the bar on site and providing delicious craft beers, ales, wines and soft drinks to festival attenders. There will also be quality food and coffee concessions on site, and there are plenty of additional food options locally too, all within a few minutes walk.
We want the local community to be involved, so together with our partners the Lincolnshire Coastal Bid, there will be a number of free local stands to support local businesses and projects in the Skegness area.
We will also be collecting for the local RNLI on site over the weekend.
We are also working with some great local bands to provide music at the festival, and we are looking forward to welcoming them to the Armada. We have a cool little stage set up on the back of a truck - which with lights and a good sound system will create a really nice festival vibe. We kick everything off on the Friday evening, with a live band and DJ and the bar open, and a chance for everyone to get together and enjoy some tunes and drinks on the beach to start the festival weekend. The festival officially opens at 5pm on the Friday.
So that's it - everything you need to know. If you would like to join us, please book your free tickets on line and we will look forward to seeing you there. And when the event takes off over the coming years, you will always be able to say you were at the first ever Armada in Skegness!
